I’m gonna tell you the most boring secret in Jiu Jitsu.
The belt doesn’t go to the person who tries hardest in month three. It goes to the person who is still on the mat in year three.
That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
Twenty years in, I can tell you, I have watched hundreds of people walk through the door fired up. They train five days a week for two months. They buy the gi, they buy the rash guard, they post about it. And then something happens. Work gets busy. They tweak a finger. It rains. And they don’t come in for a week. Then two weeks. Then they’re gone.
The people who make it to blue belt, purple belt, brown, black, they’re not the ones who trained the hardest. They’re the ones who showed up on the days they did not want to.
The realest way I have to put it is this. Use it or lose it. Your body knows the difference between somebody who’s on the mat twice a week for two years and somebody who’s on the mat five times a week for two months and then disappears.
So I’m not asking you to be fired up. Honestly, the fired-up version of you scares me a little. I’m asking you to figure out two days a week that you can actually protect. And then protect them. Even on the days you don’t feel like coming in. Especially on those days. Those are the days that compound.
That’s how I’ve been doing this twenty years.
Next lesson: the first time you tap, and what it actually means.
